Chapati

Gurajrati flate bread for light meal, picnic food, snack with tea or breakfast.

Ingredients:

  • 250 gm Medium chapati flour
  • 2 tsp Oil or Ghee
  • 1 1/4 cup boiling water
  • 3-4 tbsp plain flour to roll

Recipe:

  • In a large bowl take flour, add oil or ghee or butter. (ghee and butter makes chapati quite heavy. Nice treat occasionally). Meanwhile heat the tava. They need to be quite hot.
  • Now add boiling water and mix well to make sure to incorporate all dry flour. Dough should be fairly smooth. Keep mixing the dough with spoon as much as you can.
  • Now using hand need it for about 2 to 3 minutes. Dough should be smooth and fairly soft but not too soft otherwise it’s hard to roll chapati. Also if it’s not soft enough, you might want to add little water otherwise you need to use more strength to roll them out again.
  • Once the dough is ready let it set for 2 to 3 minutes. Now make small balls from the dough. Take the dough balls in the hand and roll them to make smooth ball. Now squeeze the ball in between your palm to flatten it a bit.
  • Now take this flatten dough to dry plain flour and coat well with the plain flour.
  • Once rolled out cook them on tava.
  • On first side for about 20-30 seconds, now flip them and cook them for about 40-50 seconds.
  • Now flip them back and with some help of spatula or something, push the chapati down to encourage them to puff up. Once they are puffed take them out. If they don’t puff up after 10 -20 seconds take them out anyway once they look cooked.
  • If used oil in the dough, still can indulge yourself by buttering these chapati while they are hot.
  • Enjoy buttered hot chapati as it is, or with choice of any curry!
